My First Boss

I always have such fond memories of Gordon.  I was a young graduate in Birmingham in 1978, just looking for my first proper job after starting to take the CIMA exams.

Somehow I managed to get an interview with a company called Music For Pleasure, part of the EMI Group - I was so thrilled to have a chance to work for them!  I made the trip down to Hayes, and was interviewed by Gordon - he was fantastic and we got on straight away!  Although he was just a few months older than me he seemed so grown up and experienced in business.  Well I got the job and worked with him until he left MFP about four years later, when he started his own company.

But in that time I got to know Gordon very well.  As I lived in Woodley, in Reading, I used to drive over to his house in the morning and he would take me into MFP every day, and back in the evening.  He was the Finance Director with a company car (a Vauxhall Cavalier) so that was very generous of him and one of the things I remember so well.  Everyone in MFP loved Gordon - he was the perfect boss.  Warm and friendly, absolutely reliable, knew exactly what to do and how to do it, and knew how to manage people to get the best from them.

We also got to know Helen quite well, and of course Neil was just a little boy who they were so proud of!
One time Gordon generously gave me and my wife the keys to his lovely seaside cottage somewhere out in the west, and we had a lovely weekend there.

I eventually moved on to work for EMI's film company, and then linked up again with Gordon whose company provided a service refurbishing the old VHS video tapes which we rented out to dealers.  Everything Gordon did was always so reliable and sensible, and it was great that I could still do business with him.

But eventually he wound down his company and moved on to other things, and we lost touch.  This was all well before the Internet and email, so it wasn't so easy in those days to keep in touch once people left your closer business circle.  When the Internet did start up I would occasionally do a search for Gordon to try see what he was doing.  It was in one of these recent searches that I came across this tribute site - such a shock.

I want to just give my best wishes and condolences to all the family and friends - Gordon was a wonderful person.  One of the most important people in my early career, and I will never forget him.  Thanks Gordon, I learned such a lot from you!
